Project ZPU 1 (IUP 1) - Integrated University Project
2018 -2022
Integrated University Project implemented within the Operational Programme Knowledge Education Development in the years 2014-2020, Priority axis III Higher education for economy and development, Action 3.5 comprehensive programmes for universities. The project began on August 1st 2018 and will last until July 31st 2022. The value of the project is 13,162,101.81PLN, including 11,093,019.41 PLN in subsidies from European funds under an agreement signed between Łódź University of Technology and the National Centre for Research and Development. The programme is co-financed by the European Union from the European Social Fund. It will be implemented in 3 modules:
• curriculum module;
• module increasing student competences;
• module improving university governance, including activities aimed at increasing the competences of teachers as well as executive and administrative staff at the university.
The implementation of the project is a part of a long-term strategy developing the competencies of 1737 students from 9 faculties: the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering; the Faculty of Electrical, Electronic, Computer and Control Engineering; the Faculty of Chemistry; the Faculty of Material Technologies and Textile Design; the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Sciences; the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environmental Engineering; the Faculty of Technical Physics, Information Technology and Applied Mathematics; the Faculty of Management and Production Engineering; the Faculty of Process and Environmental Engineering and the Spatial Economy College. The competencies of staff at Łódź University of Technology will be developed in the fields of: English language, didactics, e-learning, presentation skills and soft skills in teaching. The executive and administrative staff will improve their skills in: management, foreign languages, project management, technology transfer, coaching and mentoring. The programme will benefit 151 members of the teaching staff and 150 members of the executive and administrative staff. The quality of education and management of the university will be strengthened by introducing IT tools. There is a plan to introduce a number of changes and organisational improvements in order to increase the effectiveness university management.
Research grant for teacher-practitioners using TOEFL tests

The Educational Testing Service (ETS) is a world leader in language competence evaluation and educational research, the author of such standardized language tests as TOEFL® and TOEIC®. This research grant aims to develop the competencies of teacher-practitioners working in high schools and universities as well as teachers running language courses for adults, with the use of TOEFL tests and BT or TOEFL ITP. The tests, the cost of which will be covered by ETS, must be conducted at least twice during the project (at the beginning and at the end of the project) to assess the progress of the students. The sum total of the grant is 10,000 USD.
Foreign Languages for Professionals in the Construction Industry
2017-2018
Foreign Languages for Professionals in the Construction Industry was a project conducted at Łódź University of Technology focused on the creation of e-content for students and teachers at vocational schools and vocational high schools in the construction industry. The following members of the Foreign Languages Centre staff took part in this project (in alphabetical order ): Agnieszka Burcan-Krawczyk, Magdalena Jarniewicz, Aleksandra Kaczmarek, Dorota Kulak and Agnieszka Wajs. The teachers translated the e-content into English and created exercises testing grammar competency.
”MEGAFON” project
2017
This project was implemented by the Faculty of Chemistry at Lodz University of Technology in cooperation with the Faculty of Technical Physics, Information Technology and Applied Mathematics, the International Faculty of Engineering (IFE) and the Foreign Languages Centre. The aim was to popularize science and scientific research among a group of nearly 100 school pupils aged 12 to 16 in the Łódź voivodeship. In lectures, laboratories and classes, young people had the opportunity to develop their both their interests and their language and soft skills. The project consisted of 10 educational activities in chemistry and physics and courses in Teambuilding and Communication Skills conducted by experienced English language teachers: A. Kozłowska (M.A.) and I. Wróblewska (M. A.), as well as group projects carried out by the students during the project.
Didactics 2. 0
2016-2018
Didactics 2. 0 was financed by the National Centre for Research and Development. The aim of the project was to expand the teaching competence of academic staff at the university. Over three semesters (from winter semester of the academic year 2017/2018 to the winter semester of the academic year 2018/2019), almost 400 teachers employed at all faculties of Łódź University of Technology and the Centre of Mathematics and Physics had the opportunity to develop their skills and expand their competences in the following areas: modern didactics: Problem Based Learning, Design Thinking, Case Teaching, e-learning, information management, IT skills, foreign languages: English and French, courses abroad: Design Thinking Advanced, Problem Based Learning Advanced. The trainings were led by experienced members of staff from Łódź University of Technology and qualified external coaches, including our employees.
2016-2018
Employees of the Foreign Languages Centre: M. Nowacka, E. Krawczyk, J. Speller and J. Miłosz-Bartczak prepared and delivered a unique course as part of Didactics 2.0. ‘Soft Skills for ICT English’ (POWR. 03. 04. 00-00-D0001/16-00) was a bespoke course for students at the Faculty of Electrical, Electronic, Computer and Control Engineering. The aim of the course was to develop language and soft skills, such as presentation skills, teamwork and negotiation techniques.
The young in Łódź – Hosted by Languages
2016-2017
Funded by the Municipal Office of Łódź, teachers from the Foreign Languages Centre at Łódź University of Technology conducted courses in “niche” languages including Finnish, Danish and Swedish. The project entitled “The Young in Łódź – Hosted by Languages” was a part of the programme “The Young in Łódź ”, targeted at students and unemployed graduates of Łódź universities. Its aim was to promote learning niche foreign languages and to encourage Łódź students and graduates to upgrade their competences.
WIKI project
2014-2016
Between 2014 and 2016, Łódź University of Technology completed a project aiming to establish its presence in the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia. The role of the Foreign Languages Centre at Łódź University of Technology was to create articles about the university and its faculties in English and other languages. The work of many Wikipedian editors from the Foreign Languages Centre was appreciated by the authorities of our university. The Foreign Languages Centre was distinguished as one of the three best-performing units in the field of Wikipedia.

On Friendly Terms with Science, OP HC
2010
In January and February 2010, Łódź University of Technology hosted over 780 students from primary and lower secondary schools from several municipalities (partners in the project) for classes, lectures and laboratories in physics, chemistry, medicine, etc. Robert Cynkier, MA, English language instructor, an employee of the Foreign Languages Centre, taught basic terms for mathematics, physics and chemistry in English during a lecture entitled “Gateway to Science”. The main purpose of the lecture, combined with games and language quizzes, was to show the necessity of learning a foreign language in order to function in the modern world of science.
