The Language Centre at Lodz University of Technology is a member of SERMO – the Association of Academic Foreign Language Teaching Centres
SERMO, established in 2006, is a nationwide association bringing together the management staff of academic centres involved in foreign language teaching. The association is an organisation that integrates and represents the interests of lecturers at universities. It works to help each other by sharing experiences and good ideas, and to assist in solving difficult problems in a changing academic environment. During regular meetings, the management staff improve their professional qualifications and skills useful in team management. The association's priority is to improve the quality of foreign language teaching and implement good practices.
In order to meet the ever-growing demands of university authorities and students, the association has begun work on the development and implementation of common criteria for the evaluation of language competencies at all levels of study and the introduction of the SERMO-certified ACERT profiled exam at universities of the same type. SERMO represents Polish academic centres in the international organisation CercleS.
The aim of the Association is:
1. To integrate the academic language centres, hereinafter referred to as AOJ, and to represent the interests of this community in Poland, abroad and in international organisations;
2. Disseminating criteria for good practice in foreign language teaching and ensuring the quality of educational services provided;
3. Undertaking activities aimed at standardising the certification of learning outcomes, improving the language and methodological qualifications of academic foreign language teachers and improving the managerial skills of AOJ management staff.
4. Ensuring a high standard of materials and teaching aids used in professional practice;
5. Creating a forum for the exchange of information and professional experience, discussion of the goals and responsibilities of the academic foreign language teaching community;
6. Facilitating the flow of information on learning and improving teaching methods;
7. Cooperating with organisations associating foreign language teachers and institutions involved in foreign language education in Poland and abroad;
8. Cooperating with representatives of public administration on matters related to language education.
